One More Makes Four as Bosco Beats Peter’s Again

As the curtain closes on Giants Stadium, no one will be sadder to see it fall than the Don Bosco Ironmen. And no one will probably be happier than St Peter’s Prep. The Ironmen clinched their fourth consecutive state championship on Saturday afternoon with a 35-15 triumph over the St Peter’s Prep Marauders. Of their four consecutive titles at the Meadowlands, three of the four came against the Marauders. The other title victory came against Bergen Catholic in 2008. The Ironmen made sure they set the tone early.

On the opening kickoff, Chris Corvino laid a crushing hit on a St Peter’s defender. On the 1st play from scrimmage a Ryan Cobb interception gave the Ironmen terrific field position. Minutes later, Tony Jones punched it in from the one yard line to give the Ironmen an early lead. Another one yard plunge by Jones made it 13-0. A 20 yard hookup between Raphael Ortiz and Evan Royster closed the gap to 13-7, but yet another Jones run (this one from 5 yards out) extended the lead to 20-7. The Ironmen blew the game open on Jones’s 40 yard reception from Gary Nova. After an Aidan Murray field goal, the Marauders seem to draw near in the 4th on a 9 yard run by Ortiz. A two point conversion made it 29-15, but yet another touchdown by Jones provided all the insurance the Ironmen would need.

With their fourth consecutive state title, the Ironmen have a dynasty that has never been matched in the history of New Jersey high school football-and probably never will. Stay tuned later this week for a season recap on this record breaking team.
